Kelvinside Gardens

Renovation of an old merchant townhouse in the west end of Glasgow, Scotland. Originally built in 1880 to a very high standard our intervention focused on restoring original features that had been covered up in the 1970s.

The hardwood floors were exposed and carefully refurbished, and the floorplan was reorganized to improve usability and efficiency of space, and to also make greater use of natural light. The original brick chimney was opened up, repointed and lined to allow the installation of an efficient wood burning stove.

External repointing of stonework was carried out using lime, a more durable option than cement, and in keeping with original works. To reduce heating costs, parts of the exterior wall (where original features like cornicing would not be impacted) were insulated and the original windows were rebuilt and draught proofed to improve airtightness.
